1930s Summer Dress

Lovely 1930s/1940s Summer Dress

A gorgeous 1930s dress, possibly early 1940s. I can just see this beauty walking through Winchester’s Water Meadows with a refreshing cup of Summer Punch! This pretty floral crepe dress was made for the original owner by her sister who continued to make her sibling’s clothes from the 1930s through to the 1960s! What a lovely (and talented) sister to have!

I have to admit the dress form really doesn’t do justice to this pretty vintage summer dress. She has two tie belts at the side which tie at the back to give her a lovely shape with a small side zip. This dress has been made with love and care – even the inner shoulder pads are covered in the same floral fabric. The centre bow is made of the same fabric as the velvet trim to the sleeves. You might like to put a stitch in either side to lift the bow but it doesn’t look as though it was originally sewn to the fabric.

Approx measurements: Bust 33-34″; Waist 25-26″ Similar to today’s UK size 8.

Condition report: A few marks but could be forgiven, perhaps, on such a lovely piece of 1930/40s English history. We had to have the centre seam in the front of the dress professionally mended due to the heavy-handedness of a professional catwalk model!

Ideal for those long summer days!
